In Yamal scientists will be busy with the project “Man in the Arctic”

The governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov identified the main priority for development of science in Yamal. It is aimed at development of the West Siberian scientific and educational center, which should reach the world level. The information was given on the 6^th of February by Dmitry Frolov, the director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic at the press conference in the news agency “Sever-Press” dedicated to the Russian day of science.

Dmitry Frolov underlined that 2019 had been very important for science of Yamal. He reminded that the President had initiated the national project “Science”. The issue on creation of the world-class West Siberian scientific and educational center was resolved throughout the year within the project. The scientific and educational center will bring together specialists from several research centers of Tyumen Oblast, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In January the strategic session with participation of all the interested sides was held in Salekhard.  

“Such mechanism is extremely important, as it is aimed at bringing economy of the country, including Yamal, to a completely new level, and defining significance of all research being conducted both in the region and in the Arctic”, the director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic said. – “If earlier it was planned that 3 projects would be implemented within the West Siberian scientific and educational center in Yamal, now we have decided that one more will be added — “Man in the Arctic”. It is dedicated to social and humanitarian research and will include issues of mobility of population, socioeconomic situation of indigenous peoples of the North, not only tundra dwellers but also town dwellers.
