Starting from the 10th of February, the structure of scientific center for study of the Arctic will change. Currently 67 people work there, 43 of them are researchers, including 1 doctor of science and 11 candidates of science. Research will be fulfilled in 7 areas, 2 of them — in Nadym, in the sectors for ecological-biological and socio-psychological research. The information was given on the 6th of February by Dmitry Frolov, the director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic at the press conference in the news agency “Sever-Press”.
He gave an example of studies in the Nadym sector, which were started in cooperation with the charitable foundation “Yamine” with involvement of specialists from federal higher education institutions on creation of rehabilitation programs for children with disabilities. Methodological guidance that will help fulfilling health improvement of children in situations of social centers will become the result. According to Dmitry Frolov, this is very important, because in our country such amounts of research on this topic are not fulfilled, and the scientific center has all the resources for this work.
The sector for ecological monitoring in Salekhard will receive new powers with the wide range of studies. It will be renamed to the sector for environmental protection. It is planned to increase the number of researchers in the sector for history and archaeology. Important results on history of participation of Yamal in the Great Patriotic War were outlined in the year of the 75th anniversary of the Victory. They will be published soon.
The sector for ethnology will be strengthened and renamed to the sector for cultural anthropology. Significant topics that will be considered by specialists in the sector were raised as a result of the conference “Humanitarian readings” last year. Sociology will become an important area. Scientists will find out topics touching upon representatives of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North and will study them. Research will also be conducted on languages, culture and ethnography of northern peoples. According to Dmitry Frolov, the issues always were significant, but now it is necessary to breathe new energy, to establish work with young scientists, who speak at conferences on reports about the situation outside the region. The scientific center will become a single platform for discussion of general issues.
Research will also be conducted on life strategies of population of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. For example, activity of Yamal youth is one of the most significant issues. Results of the research can find a place in the concept of socioeconomic development of the region for the next 5-10 years.
Dmitry Frolov sees the main objective of the center in so that research to improve life of population in the region would find practical application, would be implemented in work and, probably, would be based on some regional normative and legal acts.
“Of course, we should be busy not only with applied research, but also to pay attention to needs of the public, to identify them and to prepare recommendations for the executive authorities, as well as to offer variants for their solutions”, said the director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic.
