75 years of the Victory. Residents of Yamal helped to fight against fascism both at the battle front and the home front

The whole country is celebrating the 75^th anniversary of the Great Victory this year. Yamal is proud of its contribution to the struggle against fascism. It was announced on the 7^th of February by the head of the region Dmitry Artyukhov within the annual report on the situation in the Autonomous Okrug.

“People of Yamal, young and old, went to the battle front, fought valiantly and proved themselves to be true heroes. Our tundra dwellers were excellent at shooting and reconnaissance. Reindeer sleighs brought ammunition and helped to evacuate the wounded. Girls from Yamal voluntarily went to the battle front and became military nurses. Those, who stayed at home, day after day brought the victory closer with their work. Catching of fish was several times increased. 65 thousand items of warm clothes were sent to the battle front from Yamal”, as the governor said.

Dmitry Artyukhov reminds that more than three thousand residents of Yamal were awarded with the medal for valiant work during the Great Patriotic War. And it was exactly a radio station of a soldier from Yamal, petty officer Mikhail Ryabkov that first informed the world that the Soviet flag of the Victory was flying over the German Reichstag.

“Our land is famous for its heroes. Today we must follow their example. We face difficult challenges. But we will cope with them – people of Yamal always proved that they can do even the impossible. This is our northern character”, the governor said.
