The national library of Yamal hosted the presentation of the debut book by Antonina Syazi (Seraskhova) about the woman-storyteller and the son of the head of the city. This is the author’s first major prose work.
Antonina was born in the Polar Urals, in a family of reindeer herders, her parents loved to tell stories. Since childhood she loved the world of fairy tales.
The idea to create a book came to her four years ago. As Antonina Syazi says, at first it was scattered sketches, reminiscences, fragments, deeply personal memories. The mysterious northern legends and fairy tales of Khanty people the author heard, when she was a child, and memories about her ancestors-reindeer herders became a connecting thread. The book tells about good and evil, meanness and deceit. And as in any fairy tale, necessarily good wins over evil.
It is worth noting that Antonina Syazi herself illustrated the book.
The book also includes a story about the Great Patriotic War. In it the writer tells about her mother Marfa, who together with her father delivered cargoes with food to Vorkuta on reindeer during the war.
“In those years many people of Yamal helped the battlefront, whole herds of reindeer were sent to Beryozovo”, the writer recalled.
Antonina Syazi is also a skilled craftswoman, who perfectly sews and embroiders. She is a recognized expert in study of culture of Yamal peoples. In 2016 she was awarded with the prize of the Governor of Yamal for her success in creation, preservation and promotion of cultural values of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North.
