New studies and other prospects for cooperation between Yamal and the University of the Arctic

The delegation of Yamal participated in the first annual meeting of the Assembly of the University of the Arctic, which was held in Denmark. The representatives of Yamal voted on key organizational issues related to activity and plans of the organization for 2020. Contacts for development of international cooperation in the sphere of science and education were established.
Representatives of the department of external relations, the scientific center for study of the Arctic and Yamal Multidisciplinary College participated in work of the Assembly from Yamal. They held negotiations with employees of the center for Sami education from Finland in terms of extension of cooperation in the sphere of reindeer husbandry and applied art of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North. They discussed prospects of partnership between the scientific center for study of the Arctic and Liaocheng University from China. The Arctic research center was created on the basis of the higher education institution. The center studies interaction between the man and the environment, problems of culture and ecology and publishes a magazine of arctic research in Chinese and English.
The representatives of Yamal got acquainted with the presentations of projects by participants of the Assembly in various scientific and educational areas, in which all members of the University of the Arctic can participate. According to Dmitry Frolov, the director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, new promising topics interesting for scientists from Yamal appeared.
“For example, climate justice initiated by Glasgow Caledonian University from the UK is a completely new topic for us. This is the sphere of political sciences of global distribution of quotas for greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere”, commented Dmitry Frolov. – “Participation in the thematic network “Transport and logistics in the Arctic”, which is headed by Nord University from Norway, can be relevant in the context of development of the Northern Latitudinal Railway. Projects on research of formation of arctic identity and gender studies are interesting in the cultural aspect. Gender issues have already been raised at the scientific center for study of the Arctic. Thus, the monograph by Stella Serpivo “Women’s space in Nenets culture” was published in 2016.
The University of the Arctic is an international network that unites 217 higher education institutions and scientific organizations in different countries of the world. This is one of the most successful examples of international cooperation in the sphere of science and education. The official opening took place in 2001 in Finland.
In 2011 the government of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and the University of the Arctic signed the agreement on cooperation in the sphere of education, preservation of cultural heritage and socioeconomic development of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North.
