The yacht crossing will connect historical and industrial centers of the Arctic

In August 2020 the sailing expedition will depart from the port of the city of military glory Arkhangelsk to Salekhard. The yacht “Zhemchuzhina” (The Pearl) will pass along the Arctic coast of Arkhangelsk region, Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug with the honorary mission of laying wreaths in the places, where ships were lost during the Great Patriotic War. One of the stops will be made on Beliy Island, where the mass grave of soldiers of the Arctic convoy “White Sea – Dikson 5” is located.
The historical memorial sea crossing of the sailing yacht is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory and is aimed at promotion of history of the Great Patriotic War in the Arctic, as the department of external relations of Yamal informs. On the way to Salekhard the team plans to visit coastal ports and villages in Yamal for meetings with local population and rotation workers. A video will be shot along the route of the yacht crossing that will connect historical and industrial centers of the Arctic.
The expedition is organized by the Russian center for the Arctic exploration and the Association “Shipbuilding and Arctic Marine Engineering Cluster in Arkhangelsk Region”. Cooperation between the two organizations was started at the Yamal oil and gas forum in Noviy Urengoy. The director of the Russian center for the Arctic exploration Andrey Umnikov and the director of the Association Sergey Smirnov signed the agreement on cooperation. The sides agreed to conduct joint scientific, ecological and geographical expeditions, seminars, conferences and meetings, to support arctic projects for development of domestic and inbound tourism, and to expand creative, cultural and scientific ties.
