Preparation for the calving campaign, which starts at the end of April and lasts throughout May, is beginning in Yamal. The first calf usually appears on the 22nd of April in one of the southern districts of the region. Reindeer herders provided themselves with food, as they will have a long travel to summer calving pastures. They transport things before the ice breaks up on the rivers, and then together with their herds the reindeer herders will need to cross the rivers quickly and without luggage. It was announced today on the 18th of March at the briefing by the head of the department of agriculture of Yamal Andrey Revnivykh.
According to him, now the reindeer herders are on winter pastures, every year at this time they traditionally move to the south. For example, from Yamalskiy district to the side of Nadymskiy district, to good pastures of reindeer moss. This year the reindeer are well-fed, since this autumn and winter were without ice crust, availability of food was excellent. When summing up the results of the slaughter campaign, they noted that the fatness of the reindeer was eight percent more than last year.
“There are no fears yet, but there is a lot of time before calving, and nature can still present various “surprises”, said Andrey Revnivykh. – “Everything will depend on what the weather will be at the end of April — May, but we hope for the best. All enterprises and municipalities are on alert due to temperature fluctuations, and the situation with pastures is being monitored. The department recommended to stock up on reserves: stocks of salt, mixed cattle feed, material and technical means in case of an emergency”.
Currently, about 690 thousand reindeer are grazed on the territory of Yamal, of which only 100 thousand are in agricultural organizations and 100 thousand are in ethnic communities, the rest belong to private reindeer herders. About 100 thousand reindeer calves are being expected in agricultural organizations together with ethnic communities. Private owners, whose households have another structure of herds, have on an average about 250-300 thousand reindeer calves.
