The interregional public ecological and sociological organization “Green Arctic” is launching the project on comprehensive training of ecological volunteers. Its aim is to present significant and relevant knowledge to people interested in ecology and also to improve the process of selection of volunteers for expeditions.
The peculiarity of the project is in an efficient approach — the combination of the distance education course with the opportunity to apply and consolidate the knowledge gained within ecological expeditions on the territory of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Young people trained in this way will have the common theoretical base, which will help them not only cope with the team task within expeditions, but also continue to share the values of “Green Arctic” after their return home, as the department of external relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug informs.
The project on comprehensive training of ecological volunteers includes three consecutive stages: a contest selection, a distance education program, ecological expeditions from July to August 2020.
From the 9th to the 20th of March people wishing to attend the training course were interviewed and tested with subsequent evaluation of the results in conformity with the point-rating system. In total 267 applications were submitted. According to the results, 140 participants (young women and men) from 8 countries were selected: Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Bulgaria, Armenia, Poland, Israel, Moldova. The selected participants received the opportunity to participate in the second stage of the distance education program free of charge.
The educational program of the Arctic volunteers is a distance learning course from experts of “Green Arctic” on ecology and volunteer activity in conditions of the Far North.
The program consists of consecutive completion of academic disciplines by viewing lectures-webinars in online format or recording, and also includes solution of test tasks. A scientist-ecologist, an urban ecological activist, an expert in modern ecological trends and media platforms, a political scientist, a rehabilitation specialist, an emergency response worker and a polar explorer will be speakers at the course.
The program starts on the 24th of March and will last 5 weeks till the 24th of April — 3 evening online classes per week. The optional course will take place on the last week.
The third stage includes ecological volunteer projects on the territory of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation being implemented by “Green Arctic” in 2020. The volunteer expeditions of “Green Arctic” in 2020 include ecological cleaning of Vilkitsky Island; the expedition to Beliy Island (only experienced Arctic volunteers); the expedition for integrated ecological monitoring on the territory of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (only experienced Arctic volunteers); cleaning of the coastline of Kharasaveyskoye field; economic activities on Franz Josef Land (only experienced Arctic volunteers).
