The Northern Latitudinal Railway and transportations. Yamal and Russian Railways outlined the most important issues of cooperation

The government of Yamal and Russian Railways signed the agreement on interaction and cooperation in the sphere of railroad transport for 2020-2022. The document was signed by the governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov and the head of the Sverdlovsk Railway Ivan Kolesnikov.

The agreement defines directions of interaction between the sides in development of railroad transport infrastructure, transport services for population and industrial enterprises, transport security and socioeconomic growth. Among the important tasks there are the following: development of promising cargo amounts, creation of transport interchange hubs and modernization of passenger facilities with formation of the barrier-free environment for people with disabilities. The agreement also refers to cooperation in implementation of the Northern Latitudinal Railway, including development of passenger infrastructure, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.

“In the coming years major infrastructural projects will be implemented in Yamal, primarily the Northern Latitudinal Railway. The project is technically complex and has no analogues. For our part, we will continue providing the company with all the necessary support, in order the process of construction of the road begins as soon as possible, and in general for development of railroad communication in the region”, Dmitry Artyukhov said.

According to Ivan Kolesnikov, the Northern Latitudinal Railway will significantly reduce the length of transport routes from extractive fields in northern regions of Western Siberia to ports of the Baltic, White, Barents and Kara seas. In addition, the new line will assist to solve the problem of overload on the existing southern route that reaches the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Northern Latitudinal Railway will be implemented on the principles of public-private partnership in the form of a concession. At that, within its investment program Russian Railways will fulfill work on reconstruction of sections of the Severnaya Railway (the Northern Railway) adjoining to the Northern Latitudinal Railway, as well as modernization of the line “Pangody – Noviy Urengoy – Korotchayevo” of the Sverdlovsk Railway.

The head of the Sverdlovsk Railway told that investments of Russian Railways in development of the main line in Yamal in 2019 made 1 milliard 700 million rubles, this year it is expected to grow by 18% — up to 2 milliard rubles. 10 million 800 thousand tonnes of cargoes were sent from stations of the Sverdlovsk Railway within the borders of Yamal (the increase by 3.3% is planned for 2020). The holding “Russian Railways” is implementing large-scale projects to develop promising cargo amounts and to ensure economic growth of the territories. The sides also marked the significance of taking measures to strengthen personnel of mass professions in the region necessary for construction and operation of the Northern Latitudinal Railway (locomotive crews and workers of railway equipment), including such as implementation of housing and educational programs.
