The chairman of the branch of the Russian Geographical Society in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Igor Znamenskiy within the snowmobile expedition “Legends of the Arctic – 2020” came back from almost month travel to Rastorguyev Island.
On the 5th of March the participants of the expedition went by snowmobiles on the route “Tazovskiy – Antipayuta – Gyda – Sopochnaya Karga – Rastorguyev Island” and back. On the 13th of March they met with like-minded people from Norilsk on the intermediate point “Sopochnaya Karga”. Then the group went to the most dangerous part of the route with the length 500 kilometers.
After night in tundra on the Pyasina River 270 kilometers away from the polar station “Sopochnaya Karga” the travelers made the 9-hour travel by 5 snowmobiles at the air temperature 30C degrees below zero. They crossed Pyasino Gulf (Pyasina Bay) in the north of Taymyr and, having passed 40 kilometers on the ice of the Kara Sea, they reached the eastern point of Rastorguyev Island, where they organized the camp. According to the administration of Purovskiy district in the social network “VKontakte”, the length of the route from the starting point of the expedition – the settlement Tazovskiy – made 1286 kilometers.
The expedition is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Fridtjof Nansen’s Arctic expedition on the schooner “Fram”, and Rastorguyev Island itself is located in the southern part of the Kara Sea (to the north from the Taymyr Peninsula) and is named after the Russian polar explorer Stepan Rastorguyev.
