Yamal expects to host the Arctic Winter Games in 2026. It was announced by the head of the region Dmitry Artyukhov in an interview to TASS.
“I hope that we will win the right to host the competitions that are traditionally held in North America. However, Greenland can still claim them. The games have never been held in Scandinavia or Russia. The evaluation commission has already visited us, and its representatives liked everything”, said the governor of Yamal.
The Arctic Winter Games have been held every two years since 1970 with participants from Russia, Canada, the USA, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Since 2004 the team of Yamal has represented Russia at the games. In 2020 the Arctic Games, which were supposed to be held in Canada, were canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus. It was planned that about 70 sportspeople of Yamal would participate in the competitions.
The region hopes to host the Russia’s first Arctic Winter Games in 2026. Salekhard, where there are sports halls and complexes, hotels, cafes, restaurants and cultural institutions, was chosen as a potential venue for the competitions.
