According to a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Eduard Yaungad, all heads of rural settlements, where residents of Yamal leading the nomadic lifestyle live, received recommendations of the operational headquarters to prevent from the spread of the coronavirus. They contain the necessary measures to create conditions for self-isolation.
It is worth noting that self-isolation in tundra in a choum is impossible for obvious reasons. (The note: a choum is a dwelling of nomads, reindeer herders; it is a tent covered with reindeer hides and similar to a tepee). The whole life of a tundra dweller is spent in the open air. The recommendations in this case include restricting of visits to settlements unless it is absolutely necessary. The authorities provided for organized distribution of goods and materials upon prior request. A date and time to receive goods will be assigned for each person, and applicants will be notified by phone beforehand. It will allow following all prevention measures.
Nomads receive goods necessary for life in tundra within the regional standard for minimum material security. The list of the regional standard includes prime necessities, components for a choum (nomadic dwelling, similar to a tepee), tarpaulin, broadcloth, first aid kits, as well as satellite phones with already paid communication services. Support for tundra residents is fulfilled on the basis of applications with requests and is provided in order of priority.
At the same time, tundra dwellers are confident in protection of their traditional homes from viruses. After all, choums have been smoked with fire of the hearth for centuries. According to the honored citizen of Yamal Khabecha Yaungad, a choum is a place that will protect reindeer herders.
“The paradox is that we cannot stay inside all the time. Self-isolation in this form is impossible. After breakfast a nomad should no longer enjoy comfort of the choum. He has to pasture reindeer, to chop wood, to melt ice to receive water, and so on. But even when he drops in the choum for lunch, he is sure that this dome will protect him for long time. There is always fire of the hearth, which forever smoked the walls and left no room for the virus”, Yaungad supposed.
