The professional holiday – the Polar Explorer’s Day was established by the decree of the President of Russia in 2013 in recognition of achievements of polar explorers. The date was chosen not by chance; exactly on this day in 1937 the first drifting polar station “North Pole-1” was opened. In 2012 Artur Chilingarov, the special envoy of the President of the Russian Federation on international cooperation in the Arctic, took the initiative to establish the holiday.
The governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov congratulated residents of Yamal with the Polar Explorer’s Day.
“Today Yamal is the driver of industrial production in Russia. Together with key fuel and energy companies the region implements significant state projects, provides economic growth and jobs, ensures energy and ecological security. All this is the key to decent life for residents of Yamal and comfortable development of our towns and settlements. Labor exploits of Russian polar explorers laid the foundation for modern development of our state and strengthening of its investment potential in the Arctic. And on the Polar Explorer’s Day we honor those people, who made a significant contribution to development of the Arctic latitudes, opening up unique opportunities for our country and the whole world on the northern territories. I congratulate the polar explorers on their professional holiday and wish them further success! I wish everyone good health and wellbeing”, the head of the region said in his congratulation.
