The exhibition “Fragments of fragile memory” was opened in the Museum and Exhibition complex of Ivan Shemanovskiy. The exposition is organized within the project “Exposition debut”.
For the first time the exhibition will show images captured on glass photographic plates more than 90 years ago. An amateur photographer, an explorer of Yamal, a geodesist, a chess player, a hunter and a popularizer of scientific knowledge Vladimir Yevladov (1893-1974) is their author. In 2017 the main Museum of Yamal became the owner of the huge scientific and historical archive preserved by his son Pyotr Yevladov. The archive contained several hundred glass photographic negatives. Some of them were rejected by the author immediately after development, but for some reason they were not destroyed, but preserved.
Primitive technologies for reading photographic images in the middle of the 20th century did not allow editing imperfections associated with incorrect photographic exposure, poor-quality development and various mechanical damages to both the glass and the thin layer of photo-emulsion on it.
The Museum managed to overcome the process of entropy and with help of modern computer technologies to do what seemed impossible to the author of the images. A museum restorer Sergey Pitukhin extracted the maximum possible information from the fading, cracked and crumbling negatives and reproduced the almost century-old images.
The exhibition will present the images taken from the glass photographic plates and grouped into three themes: family photos of the Yevladov family, storyline and portrait images taken by the author in Obdorsk in 1926-1929 and images with views taken by the author in Yamal in 1928-1929. The exhibition will run until the 27th of August.
