On the 24th of June the expedition for monitoring of the number of rare predatory birds will go from Labytnangi to the southern Yamal. Candidate of biological sciences Svetlana Mechnikova is the head of the expedition.
The ornithologists will study the middle course of the Shchuchya River to collect data about the state of nesting groups of predatory birds listed in the Red Books of the Russian Federation and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The results of long-term monitoring are in demand when developing activities on protection and restoration of the number of rare bird species.
According to Svetlana Mechnikova, there are “bottlenecks” in ecology of gyrfalcons. They breed in early spring, when snow has not thawed yet. They do not build their own nests, preferring to occupy nests of other birds. Ornithologists from the Union for the protection of birds of Russia build artificial nests for success of gyrfalcon breeding.
42 wooden structures were installed from 2010 to 2019. During the expedition the ornithologists will check how the birds occupy them. They will install new artificial nests and restore constructions that require repair. As noted in the regional department of external relations, the research is being fulfilled within the comprehensive scientific research expedition “Yamal-Arctic”.
