The field stage of the project “Ecological safety of the Ob-Irtysh river basin” was completed. The project is being fulfilled at financial support of the government of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug within the arctic agenda of the West-Siberian interregional scientific and educational center. Scientists from Tyumen, Barnaul and Salekhard conducted the research on the Ob River near the settlement Salemal, Yamalskiy district.
Assessment of amounts and composition of polluting substances being brought by the river flow to the Gulf of Ob and the Kara Sea as well as study of dynamic of water-chemical and hydro-biological indexes in the context of intensification of technogenic influence and global climate changes are the basic directions of the project. According to the board of strategic communication at Tyumen State University, the research is especially important in making scientifically substantiated forecasted assessments of technogenic transformation of water areas of the Gulf of Ob at fulfillment of Yamal LNG programs.
“The started work allows receiving principally new data about hydrology of the river, distribution of polluting substances in water and bottom sediments and also about living organisms of ecological system of the Lower Ob”, as the head of the project, a professor of Tyumen State University Andrey Soromotin noted.
The director of Institute of Earth Sciences at Tyumen State University Vitaliy Khoroshavin, evaluating prospects of the project, explaining the value of the conducted first step of the research, said that the team of the project had managed to receive unique information about the state of the Ob River in one of the most critical moments of its life. Because of the abnormal heat in summer 2020 became a year and a season with minimal indexes of water amounts in the river basin. According to him, an educational moment of the project is also important: master’s students of Tyumen State University are involved in the field work in the Far North.
“A river is a living system, living organisms that live in it are the most important part of any river, and the number of species in the Ob River reaches several hundreds. In addition to its importance as a biological resource, the biota performs the function of self-purification and maintenance of the balance of substances in the aquatic ecosystem. The project will analyze the species diversity and the quantity of algae and aquatic invertebrates living in the Ob, which are the most important food base”, said Vladimir Kirillov, the head of the laboratory of water ecology of Institute for Water and Environmental Problems of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
