The participants of the international scientific conference were searching for the snowy owl in Yamal tundra

The participants of the international scientific and practical conference on the snowy owl, which is taking place in Salekhard, conducted the field expedition in the district of Bovanenkovo. The scientists from Russia, Germany, France, Norway and Switzerland went to Yamal tundra to study conditions, in which the bird from the Red Book lives. Besides, they visited the ecological scientific and research stationary center in Labytnangi.

By the words of the chief of the project GREA Olivier Gilg, the specialists gathered here to speak about the snowy owl. This unique and charismatic bird does not live by itself. Snowy owls depend on partridges in winter and on lemmings in summer. Therefore, it is important to know about the ecological system in general, how it will change in connection with climate changes. Therefore, appearing of bigger number of points for monitoring in the circumpolar region is important. In spite of so that the participants of the conference did not succeed to see the snowy owl, they are contented with the trip – the ornithologists heard much about unique nature and landscapes of Yamal. By the information given to a correspondent of IA "Sever-Press" by Olivier Gilg, who dedicated a quarter of the century to researches of nature in Greenland, Yamal is one of not many places in the Arctic, where alteration of several climate zones is observed. At that, here scientists conduct monitoring of some species of animals during 50 years. In Greenland such researches are conducted two times less. As we should remind, the international scientific and practical conference on study and preservation of the snowy owl was organized in Salekhard at support of the department on science and innovations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the department of international and external economic relations of the region, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug to attract attention to problems of preservation of rare species of animals and birds living in the Far North.
