“The people’s program” will answer difficult questions about life of tundra dwellers in modern economy

“The people’s program” was approved and adopted in Yamal last year. Basic directions on improvement of quality of tundra-dwellers’ life is written in it. This year fulfillment of the program was started. The special housing fund for families in special need from indigenous ethnic minorities – pensioners, veterans and disabled people, who earlier conducted nomadic lifestyle, is being formed. The governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov informed about it in his report on the state of affairs in the region

The first apartments were purchased in Yar-Salye. Tazovskiy district will join the program next year as a pilot district.

At that, the governor admits that the situation is complicated, when economy of reindeer husbandry is not able to satisfy growing needs of people. He notes that traditional economy does not bring appropriate revenue to indigenous population. At that ecological capacity of tundra restricts growth of the reindeer herd.

“Already next year we should decide what way to go and what to do in order to increase wellbeing of indigenous population and to keep ecological balance. We have resources, but it is important to make the right choice. And, of course, representatives of our indigenous ethnic minorities, wise keepers of the North, should say their main opinion”, as the head of the region noted.

He entrusted to organize this work in the honest dialogue with all tundra dwellers.
