A monograph about space of a woman in culture of Nenets people was published in Yamal

The monograph by a junior researcher of the sector of ethnology at the scientific center for study of the Arctic Stella Serpivo “Woman’s space in culture of Nenets people” was published.

The book can be very interesting for ethnographers, religious studies scholars, historians, local lore specialists, teachers, students and readers, who want to learn more about modern situation of peoples of the North. The monograph presents stereotypes and roles, outlines ritual boundaries of activity of a Nenets woman in the traditional society and socio-cultural processes leading to change of her status, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs. The author shows that preservation of traditional culture is directly connected with space of a woman. Such factors as accessibility of education, active inclusion into economic life of the region, growing number of inter-ethnic marriages changed a position of a Nenets woman in the society. Nevertheless, the scientist notes that women-representatives of Nenets people still keep an ethnic stereotype in behavior, which is passed from generation to generation and serves the basis of preservation of traditional values and, as a result, requires for further study. The monograph includes considerable vocabulary material connected with the topic of the research. The book was prepared on the basis of ethnographic sources and field materials of the author. Doctor of historical sciences Yelena Pushkaryova and a candidate of historical sciences Galina Kharyuchi are the reviewers. Doctor of philosophic sciences, professor of the department of ethnic and cultural studies of Herzen State pedagogical university Igor Nabok is the scientific editor. The monograph was published by the initiative of the scientific center for study of the Arctic and will be presented on the scientific and practical conference “Obdoria: history, culture, modernity”, which will take place in Salekhard on the 14th and 15th of November.
