A scientist from Yamal will calculate economic reserve of lichens in Purovskiy district
A junior researcher of the sector of economic geography at the center for study of the Arctic Sergey Zuyev participated in the expedition to Purovskiy district. He studied socioeconomic problems of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North conducting nomadic way of life.
The tasks of the research included study of the level and quality of life of fishermen’s and reindeer herders’ families, calculation of economic reserve of feeding lichens in Pyakupurovksaya and Vyngapur tundra and also lands taken for industrial development. The map-scheme with territories of traditional nature management and suggestions on rational use of reindeer pastures will be made by the results of the work. Sergey Zuyev presented this information on the press-conference by the results of the field season in the news agency “Sever-Press”. Purovskiy district is very interesting for researching of traditional nature management as on its territory there are anthropogenic landscapes formed in the result of industrial and infrastructural development of the area, as Sergey Zuyev notes. Calculating economic reserve of lichens on the studied territories, Sergey Zuyev focuses attention on feeding kinds of cladonia - Cladonia sylvatica, Cladonia rangiferina (Reindeer Lichen) and Cladonia stellaris. Their reserves, by the preliminary data of the scientist, are enough for pasturing domestic herds. The survey of nomadic population shows that reindeer herders of Pyakupurovksaya and Vyngapur tundra have no problems of pasture exhausting, but there is deficit of territories comfortable for pasturing and not subjected to anthropogenic influence. Poachers and beasts of prey are the serious problem, especially brown bears migrating from Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug because of forest fires.
