Age-old culture in modern civilization. The Art center in Salekhard is demonstrating folk arts and crafts

The exhibition of items of folk arts and crafts of Yamal was opened in Salekhard in the Art center of the regional house of crafts. It will work till the 15th of August.

This year the exhibition is dedicated to motherhood and childhood. It is demonstrating works by craftspeople of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, including employees of the regional house of crafts Alexander Sotruyev, Natalia Taligina and Alexander Matveyev. “We can consider some of our artists as young craftspeople, but they are quite professional in the sphere of wood and bone carving. Their works are made very skillfully”, as an artist-decorator of the office for exhibition activities Irina Okotetto said. At the exhibition it is possible to see items made of beads, fur and broadcloth, northern sleighs “narty” and their layouts, traditional souvenirs, models of hunting traps and gear – all that characterizes original culture of peoples of the North. In July and August the Art center schedules to conduct master classes, within which it will be possible to learn how to carve bone and wood, to make ceramic products and items of wool yarn (traditional weaving of belts).
