An important milestone. 300 milliard cubic meters of gas were extracted in the Yuzhno-Russkoye field

The joint venture of “Gazprom”, Wintershall Dea and OMV – “Severneftegazprom” is marking an important milestone: since the moment of commissioning of the Yuzhno-Russkoye field in 2007 the company has extracted 300 milliard cubic meters of natural gas. The annual amount of extraction in the field located in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug makes 25 milliard cubic meters of gas. The Yuzhno-Russkoye field provides the resource base for gas deliveries to Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline and is the largest field in the portfolio of Wintershall Dea in terms of production amounts.

According to Thilo Wieland, a representative of the Board of Wintershall Dea responsible for operations in Russia and gas transport projects, by right the company can be proud of the achieved result: 300 milliard cubic meters are the considerable amount that would be enough to meet Germany’s overall demand in gas for more than three years. Developing the reserves of the Yuzhno-Russkoye field, which provides reliable, economically effective and environmentally friendly natural gas deliveries to European consumers, “Severneftegazprom” plays an important role in providing of Europe’s energy security and is a truly exemplary enterprise in terms of contribution to Russian-European energy cooperation.

“Severneftegazprom” has been extracting gas from Cenomanian deposits since 2007. In 2009 the enterprise reached its design capacity, and in 2011 it started launching the first experimental wells for gas extraction from a Turonian deposit. Thanks to a unique technological approach, the company has become a pioneer in development of hard-to-recover reserves of Turonian deposits, as the press service of “Severneftegazprom” tells the news agency “Sever-Press”. In October of 2019 the joint venture extracted the first milliard cubic meters of Turonian gas. In the period from 2020 to 2033, within the large-scale development of Turonian deposits, it is planned to drill more than 120 new wells to maintain the design level of extraction in the field. In its work the company adheres to high ecological and technical standards, what makes “Severneftegazprom” one of the leaders of the branch in Russia along with large extraction amounts and constant implementation of advanced research and elaborations.

“Looking back at the past 22 years and 300 milliard cubic meters of extracted natural gas, we can say with confidence that exactly aspiration of our company to search for innovative solutions and to open new prospects, as well as fruitful cooperation with the partners on the joint venture became the driving force that has enabled “Severneftegazprom” to achieve such high production and financial indicators”, said Vladimir Dmitruk, the director general of “Severneftegazprom”.

Using potential of digital technologies in the sphere of gas extraction, “Severneftegazprom” is currently developing the project “Digital twin of the geological and technological model” to improve efficiency of development of Cenomanian and Turonian deposits.

According to Angelos Kalogirou, the deputy director general for development and strategic planning at “Severneftegazprom”, together with “Digital Twin” the enterprise is opening a new chapter in history of implementation of advanced technological solutions. Thanks to decrease in exploitation costs and to increase in reliability and productivity, the project will bring the company’s already successful production indicators to a new level.
