Celebrations of the Reindeer Herder’s Day were completed in Yamal. Tundra people are traveling towards summer reindeer pastures

The reindeer herder’s day took place in the settlement Gyda, Tazovskiy district. It completed the row of traditional celebrations of tundra people this year.

The area on the Gyda River became the center for celebrations. The program included the race of reindeer teams, sports competitions on national kinds of sport – sledge jumps, throwing of a tynzyan on a khorey, national wrestling and others. (The note: a tynzyan is a rope-lasso for catching reindeer; a khorey is a long pole for driving a reindeer team). The contest program “The hostess in a choum” was organized for young women of tundra, “Gyda races” – for young men (The note: a choum is a national dwelling of nomads, reindeer herders; it is similar to a tepee). Within the meeting with parents in the rural boarding school teachers told nomads about progress in studies and about behavior of their children. The contest of children’s paintings and drawings “The best holiday on the earth” and the photo-exhibition were organized in the boarding school. The meeting with participation of reindeer herders, representatives of bodies of the power and heads of local enterprises took place in the house of culture. The cultural and entertainment program included the holiday concert, sports competitions for children, the fashion show of national clothes, demonstration of the film “White Yagel” (reindeer moss) made on the basis of novels by the famous woman-writer of Yamal Anna Nerkagi. Besides, temporary offices for consultations on personal issues were organized for reindeer herders on the basis of state establishments of the settlement – the service for technical supervision of Yamal, a branch of the association “Yamal is for descendants”, the district branch of the veterinary center of Noviy Urengoy, the office of the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation and other establishments. In the district hospital the people from tundra passed general medical examination, inspection on the right to bear arms and to drive transport vehicles, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs.
