During ten days the travelers overcame the whole route of Yerofey Khabarov to Novaya Mangazeya

The field stage of the expedition “Mysteries of Mangazeya 2019” was completed in the settlement Turukhansk on the bank of the Yenisei River in Krasnoyarsk Krai on the 7th of June. On the 10th of June the participants of the expedition went home by flights from Krasnoyarsk to Noviy Urengoy, Moscow and Crimea.

The travelers Pavel Nefedov, Denis Kalinin, Danil Khusainov, Marsel Chaushev and Denis Kaurdakov on three boats overcame the route from the ancient town Mangazeya (Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug) to New Mangazeya (the settlement Staroturukhansk, Krasnoyarsk Krai) and, overcoming Yenisei, they stopped in the settlement Turukhansk.

Exactly on this way the domestic pioneers of the 16th-17th centuries reached the Yenisei River. In the beginning of the 17th century famous Yerofey Khabarov, a resident of Mangazeya, who later added vast territories of the Amur River region to Russia, went exactly on this route to the east.

On the 1st of June the participants of the expedition came to the most difficult part – the place of the terrestrial portage between two river systems – the Ob and the Yenisei. The most dramatic events in the chronology of the historical-geographical expedition took place on the 2nd-the 3rd of June exactly here. During almost two days the participants of the expedition overcame the distance in three and a half kilometers. Two circumstances made internal tension: there was no fuel for the way back and there was no assurance that the right way had been chosen towards the portage. In the result of two days of struggle with ice, debris, frozen soil, intertwined bushes, big trees blocking the way on the water the participants of the expedition reached and overcame the portage. In the previous three days the expedition overcame 70 kilometers per day, and now three kilometers in two days. At the end of the second day of struggling the expedition came to the shore of Perevalnoye Lake. On the lake the travelers found remains of a wooden pier and a wooden road.

On the 5th of June the expedition raised the camp on Perevalnoye Lake and went to the east towards Yenisei on the Pokotylky River. After the two-day travel on the rivers Verkhnyaya Baikha, Turukhan the expedition reached New Mangazeya (the settlement Staroturukhansk). During ten days the travelers overcame the whole route of Yerofey Khabarov to New Mangazeya (the settlement Staroturukhansk, Krasnoyarsk Krai) in the mouth of the Turukhan River near its flow to Yenisei.

The deputy head of the expedition Denis Kalinin briefly told about the results of the travel: “Ten days of the difficult way, during which we have repeatedly found ourselves in difficult situations, ended well, we reached the place that is conventionally called “Volok of Yerofey Khabarov”, made sure that Russian pioneers of the 17th century really had visited this place. We found remains of the pier, notches in the trees and even an inscription scratched with a sharp object on the tree, which is yet to be decoded and dated correctly. The expedition was of historical and educational nature and fully fulfilled its tasks.
