Great changes and transformations will take place on the uninhabited Vilkitsky Island

This year the ecological expedition to Vilkitsky Island will take place from the 13th of July to the 13th of August. Volunteers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Kogalym, Kurgan, Tyumen, Yaroslavl, Yekaterinburg, Kirov, Chelyabinsk, Ukhta, Salekhard, Tazovskiy and Novgorod Oblast as well as representatives of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Israel will participate in it.

Traditionally it is planned to conduct the expedition in two stages. 15 volunteers will participate in each shift. Training camps will be organized for the volunteers from the 8th to the 12th of July. The expedition to the island for the first team under the leadership of Yevgeniy Rozhkovsky will take place from the 13th to the 28th of July. The volunteers from the second group will participate in the training camps from the 22nd to the 26th of July. And on the 27th of July the volunteers under the leadership of Andrey Umnikov will go to the uninhabited island, where will stay till the 11th of August. According to the information given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” in the department of international and external economic relations of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, this year the participants of the ecological expedition will inspect the island, collect information about the current state of Vilkitsky Island and will conduct scientific research. The specialized department reminds that last year the volunteers cleaned the area in two hectares near the polar meteorological station, collected about 300 metal casks, prepared a place for accommodation of next expeditions, conducted aerial photography, inventory of hazardous wastes and objects of former infrastructure, studied soil and vegetation and also conducted radio-ecological and hydro-ecological researches.
