In the air harbor of Salekhard it is possible to see life of ancient residents of Yamal

The transportable exhibition project “On the ancient land of Yamal” was opened on the 23rd of March at the airport of Salekhard – the capital of Yamal. Exhibits are presented from fund collections of the Museum and Exhibition Complex of Ivan Shemanovskiy (the virtual tour of the museum itself can be found here http://mvk.yanao.ru/virt/).

According to the press-service of the main museum of Yamal, the exhibition is depicting culture of a modern reindeer herder, fisherman and hunter and also telling about life of ancient residents of Yamal through items of archeology.

Yamal is the territory, where traditional cultures of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North are still preserved. Large reindeer husbandry formed in the XVIII (18th) century was and stay their basic employment. Settlement and exploration of the territory of modern Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug by people has several-thousand-year history. Exploring vast space of tundra, forest tundra and taiga, each of ethnic groups chose own culture of existence.

The basic areas of the exhibition are the following: clothing and its manufacture, housing and its elements, tools for working, hunting and fishing, women’s accessories, needlework, the world of children - toys. The exhibition will work till the 31st of March.
