Inhabitants of Saint Petersburg learn about nomadic life of tundra people residing in Yamal

The round table by the results of the ethnographic expedition of scientists from Saint Petersburg to Yamal is taking place in the headquarters of the Russian Geographical Society in Saint Petersburg.

This information was given to a correspondent of IA “Sever-Press” by the chairperson of the Yamal branch of the Russian Geographical Society Igor Sharovatov. An anthropologist Alexandra Terekhina and an archeologist Alexander Volkovitskiy during a year traveled around tundra together with a family of private reindeer herders. The researchers went the way from the southern districts of the Yamal peninsula to the coast of the Kara Sea and collected unique materials about everyday life, social and economic problems of nomadic peoples of the North. They conducted the online-diary of the expedition on the official website of the project “True people” and in social networks “VKontakte” (vk.com), Facebook, Instagram. Besides, Alexandra Terekhina organized an experimental nomadic group of a kindergarten for little inhabitants of tundra, after which the children were taken to a usual school for further education. The expedition was organized at support of the government of Yamal, the administration of Yamalskiy district, the interregional expedition center “Arktika”, the district public movement of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North “Yamal”, Moscow museum of nomadic culture.
