Restoration of pastures will be implemented in Yamal

Timur Akchurin, the executive director of the Union of reindeer herders of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug held the meeting with Nikolay Shibayev, the director general of “YamalEcology”, who told about technology and measures being implemented to restore pastures, to return disturbed tundra land plots located on travel routes of reindeer herders to circulation.

It is suggested launching the project on restoration of productivity of pastures through accelerated creation of grass cover in tundra. It is planned to use optimally selected composition of grass mixtures at the background of starting mineral amendment with use of adapted means of small mechanization. It is expected to obtain stable seeded herbage and green feed without applying of a fertile soil layer in different plant subzones and on different soils.

It was decided to create the regional public foundation for restoration of pastures in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in order to implement the suggested measures effectively, to optimize costs, sustainably to finance restoration of disturbed lands of the Yamal tundra and their involvement in the pasture turnover with use of the accelerated method on creation of grass cover. The board of guardians will also include a representative of the Union of reindeer herders of Yamal. Timur Akchurin gave the information to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press”.

The main tasks of the foundation will include financing of formation and implementation of projects on restoration of vegetation cover to increase biological potential and to adapt reindeer pastures of Yamal to climate changes. The project will involve rural youth, private reindeer herders and students-volunteers. It is planned to organize registration of areas of disturbed lands, to establish a system for monitoring of areas of restored pastures, to analyze world achievements in the sphere of science, technology and equipment, to support initiative suggestions and projects for improvement of agro-technical solutions, variants for perfection of normative and legal mechanisms.

At the meeting of the executive director with the head of the enterprise “Messo” Boris Tesida from Tazovskiy district, the sides agreed that it is necessary to give the legal status to reindeer pastures, to observe the pasture turnover, to enshrine historical travel routes of reindeer herders for families, probably, in law. Timur Akchurin suggested adding a point on reproduction of vegetation cover of tundra into the section of monitoring of the state of pastures in the corresponding decree by the government of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
