Scientific research of funnels will be continued in Yamal

The acting governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitriy Kobylkin met with the deputy director on science in the Institute of Oil and Gas Problems at RAS Vasiliy Bogoyavlenskiy, who had arrived to Salekhard for the international conference "Yamal Oil and Gas 2015". They discussed issues of further development of scientific researches in the region and prospective plans of expeditions.

Vasiliy Bogoyavlenskiy told the governor about his participation in the All-Russian maritime scientific and practical conference "Arctic-2015" in Murmansk, having noted that "there are enough white spots in the Arctic". According to his words, deep water parts of the Arctic Ocean, water areas of the East Siberian Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the Laptev Sea are weakly researched. The Kara Sea and the Yamal and Gydan peninsulas are also in this row. As the scientist notes, in the result of many-year observations, researchers suppose that ice situation in the Arctic can change during the coming 20 years, at that it will be accompanied with considerable fall of temperature. As Dmitriy Kobylkin notes, people of Yamal are strong. Large projects strategically important for the whole country are fulfilled in the region, as he underlines. At that, many technological decisions on the territory are developed and fulfilled for the first time in the world. Many decisions taken in Yamal become etalon at coming to arctic latitudes, as he says. Within the meeting the talk was also about further forming of scientific researches of funnels in Yamal. The mysterious object on the Yamal peninsula was found last year. This event excited the whole world society. Several scientific expeditions were sent to the district of the funnels at assistance of the government of Yamal. Full-scale researches of the natural phenomena were conducted. Scientific work on this issue will be continued this year. As Dmitriy Kobylkin notes, for the region it is important. The Yamal peninsula is one of the most important oil and gas regions of Russia. 32 fields of hydrocarbons were discovered here on land and on water. The task is in maximum to provide safety of population, tundra people and industrial development on this territory. As we should remind, already today the peninsula possesses prepared prospected gas reserves, considerable oil and condensate reserves. The biggest herd of reindeer is pastured on the peninsula, reindeer herders with their families reside here. Therefore, the region is interested in scientific explanation of the funnels, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs. As for the future of the funnel on the peninsula, in two years, in the opinion of the scientists, it will turn into one of tundra lakes, which are situated in Yamal, and, more likely, have analogous origin. The scientists consider that it is necessary to systematize all the data and to elaborate effective methods of monitoring in order to forecast appearing of such objects, when it is possible. The local authorities of Yamal support this opinion and plan to continue work on study of natural phenomena.
