Scientists of Yamal are researching health of nomads of Gydan tundra

Specialists of the scientific center for exploration of the Arctic are conducting researches of nomadic population of Gydan tundra.

The expedition was organized by the instruction of the governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitriy Kobylkin for preliminary study of territories, on which full-scale development of oil and gas fields is planned. By the information given in the press-service of the governor of Yamal, the scientists are conducting medical and psycho-social examination of tundra population; they study such parameters of their health as functioning of cardiovascular and respiratory systems, genotoxic influence of harmful substances on organism. By the words of the deputy director of the center for exploration of the Arctic Andrey Lobanov, in this expedition the scientists plan to work exclusively in nomadic camps in order to reveal basic problems of health protection and preservation of traditional way of life of North ethnic minorities. The expedition will become the initial point of monitoring, on the basis of which the program on prevention from negative influence of industrial development on health, psychology and economic state of tundra people will be formed.
