Start of building of the first serial nuclear-powered icebreaker for Yamal will take place in Saint Petersburg
The first serial nuclear-powered icebreaker will be built in Saint Petersburg on Baltiysky Zavod (The Baltic Shipyard).
It will provide piloting of ships transporting hydrocarbon raw materials from extractive fields of the Yamal and Gydan peninsulas, the shelf of the Kara Sea to markets of countries of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The contract for building of two such serial nuclear-powered icebreakers last May was concluded between "Baltiysky Zavod – Sudostroyeniye" (The Baltic Shipyard – Shipbuilding) and the state corporation "Rosatom". The cost of the contract makes 84 milliard and 400 million rubles. The term of delivery of the serial nuclear-powered icebreakers is in December of 2019 and in December of 2020, as the agency "Arktika-Info" informs. Also the lead universal nuclear-powered icebreaker that received the name "Arktika" is being built on Baltiysky Zavod, starting with the 5th of November of 2013. It will be equipped with the nuclear power unit of a new kind and will become the biggest and the most powerful icebreaker in the world. The ship can move in different kinds of ice, including smooth solid ice. According to the conditions of the contract, building of the lead icebreaker should be completed in December of 2017.
