The army reindeer is honored in Salekhard

The event “The Day of the army reindeer” is taking place in Yamal for the first time in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Victory Day. The date is dedicated to reindeer-transport battalions and the reindeer of the years of the Great Patriotic War.

The program includes demonstration of the film “Severnaya Kavaleriya” (“The northern cavalry”) dedicated to reindeer-transport and ski battalions. The information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” by the executive director of the Union of reindeer herders of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Timur Akchurin.

According to him, the Union of reindeer herders together with the regional branch of the All-Russian council of local self-governance conducted the regular patriotic action “Immortal Argish”. (The note: argish means a caravan of reindeer sleighs). The reindeer herders supported the action “The Day of the army reindeer” and conducted the patriotic action, running with the Victory Banner along historical places of travels of their ancestors in Tazovskiy district.

As it should be reminded, reindeer-transport battalions were involved during the Great Patriotic war in the Polar Regions. Thus, in conditions of the North in absence of roads they became an irreplaceable alternative to mechanized transport vehicles. The battalions were formed basically of representatives of indigenous peoples of the North, who were busy with reindeer husbandry and went to military service together with their reindeer herds.
