The Baltiysky Zavod will build two nuclear-powered icebreakers for the Arctic
The "Baltiysky Zavod, JSC" (the Baltic Shipyard) and the state corporation "Rosatom" concluded the contract for building of two nuclear-powered icebreakers of the project 22220.
The cost of the contract makes 84 milliard and 400 million rubles. The construction of the nuclear-powered icebreakers allows using them both in arctic waters and mouths of polar rivers. The icebreakers will pilot ships transporting hydrocarbon raw materials from extractive fields of Yamal and Gydan, the shelf of the Kara Sea to markets of countries of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as IA "Arktika – Info" informs. The terms of their input to operation are: December of 2019 and December of 2020. At the present time the Baltiysky Zavod is building the head universal nuclear-powered icebreaker of the project 22220. The ship received the name "Arktika". It will be equipped with the nuclear power unit of new type RITM-200. Also it will become the biggest and the most powerful icebreaker in the world. Its length will make 173.3 meters, the width – 34 meters, deadweight – 33 thousand and 540 tons. According to the contract, it is planned to finish building of the icebreaker in December of 2017. The acting president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Igor Ponomarev is sure that creation of the series of the super-modern universal nuclear-powered icebreakers is the most important condition of confident development of Russian projects in the Arctic, from developing of the northern shelf to providing of commercial navigation on the Northern Sea Route, from safe solving of the problem of supply and fast development of circumpolar territories to fulfilling of tasks of strategic security and protection of national interests in the Arctic zone.
