The book about the Nenets people’s hero and the collection of epos and laments were published in Yamal

Historical and ethnographic essays by candidate of historical sciences, the leading researcher, the head of the sector for ethnology of the Center for study of the Arctic Galina Kharyuchi “Vavlyo Nenyang” and the collection “Folklore of Nenets people of Yamal” were published. This information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” in the scientific center for study of the Arctic.

The book “Vavlyo Nenyang” is dedicated to protest movement of the Nenets-Khanty poor people on Obdorsk land in 1820-1840 under the leadership of Vauli Piettomin, as he was named in official Russian sources. According to the author, these events are an important page in history of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North. In memory of Nenets people Vavlyo Nenyang stays the people’s hero for long years. Many places on the map of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug are connected with his name. At the same time, personality and deeds of the leader of the movement did not receive unambiguous assessment in scientific literature. Due to the lack of information, the facts about Vavlyo Nenyang are sometimes distorted and presented in conjunctural considerations.

“Therefore, we took the liberty to collect the whole known information about this movement of indigenous peoples in the first half of the 19th century in one edition”, Galina Kharyuchi says. – “The book includes materials from previously published sources and a row of historical legends, memories of fellow countrymen and descendants, which are published for the first time. Everything as much as possible is collected and presented - from folklore to works by writers, poets and playwrights”.

The collection “Folklore of Nenets people of Yamal” includes epic songs “syudbabts” and songs-laments “yarabts” recorded in Priuralskiy and Yamalskiy districts, archive materials of the newspaper “Nyaryana Ngerm” and some works of folk creative art from private libraries.

The keeper of Nenets language Neiko Yangasova is the compiler of this collection. Materials of the collection are published in Nenets and Russian. Natalia Koshkaryova, doctor of philology, professor, the chief researcher of the Institute of Philology of the Siberian branch of RAS is the editor of the texts in Russian. Great practical assistance in preparation of the edition was provided by employees of the sector for ethnology of the scientific center for study of the Arctic.

Both books are of great interest for ethnographers, historians, religious scholars, regional ethnographers, teachers and students, as well as for everyone, who is interested in traditional culture and history of peoples of the North. The books will be given to libraries and educational institutions of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
