The delegation of Yamal will participate in the forum “The Arctic: present and future”

The delegation of one of the most significant arctic regions of Russia - Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will participate in the ninth international forum “The Arctic: present and future”. It will be held in Saint Petersburg from the 5th to the 7th of December. The Association of polar explorers is its organizer.

The delegation will be headed by a deputy governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Alexander Mazharov. He will participate in the plenary session of the forum “Regions as key participants in development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation”, which will be held on the 6th of December. In addition to participation in the business program, Yamal will be presented at the exhibition. The regional exposition of the region will be one of the largest, as it is reported on the website of the forum.

Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug belongs to regions of the Far North, more than half of its territory is located behind the Polar Circle. The region has rich natural resources and takes one of the leading places in Russia in terms of natural gas and oil reserves. More than 130 oil and gas fields are located in the region. In addition, Yamal is a participant in the largest logistics project in the Arctic zone. The Northern Latitudinal Railway, the 707-kilometer long railroad line, will pass through the region, connecting the western and eastern parts of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, as well as the Northern and Sverdlovsk Railways into the unified logistics system.

It is reported that documents strategic for development of the region, including on foundations of state policy, which define Russia’s national interests in the Arctic zone, on the strategy on development of the Arctic till 2035 and on the new state program will be the cross cutting theme of the discussion agenda of the forum “The Arctic: present and future”.

Along with the basic issues of improvement of economic climate in the Arctic zone, its investment and business attractiveness, improvement of quality of life in the Arctic, the participants of the forum will discuss key issues of development of the Northern Sea Route, geological study of subsoil of the region, fundamental and scientific researches. A large block of issues will be dedicated to international cooperation in the Arctic in connection with Russia’s upcoming chairmanship in the Arctic Council in 2021-2023. It is planned to hold two plenary sessions and 35 discussion events in eight parallel streams within the two-day business program. More than 400 experts will speak within the forum. The discussion agenda will bring together more than 2500 people. More than 40 Russian regions, including all arctic regions, and 20 foreign states, including member countries and observers of the Arctic Council, will send their delegations to participate in the forum.

The exhibition, which will cover the area more than 2 thousand square meters, will demonstrate projects and technologies for socioeconomic and technological development of the modern Arctic, as well as will reflect the way of population’s life on territories of the Arctic. Russian regions and the largest Russian companies operating in the Arctic will present their projects.
