The first farmers – reindeer herders will receive additional bonuses, attention and support

The working meeting of the association on economic development of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug with representatives of communities and small forms of economy of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North took place in Salekhard on the 7th of February. The regular sitting of the Union of communities of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug took place within the event. Representatives of the department on affairs of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North, agro-industrial complex, the directorate on development of rural territories of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the National center for development of reindeer husbandry, the scientific center for study of the Arctic and the Yamal Union of Reindeer Herders discussed important issues of development of agro-industrial complex in Yamal.

The biggest attention was paid to the issue on creation of reindeer-herding peasant farm holdings: if everyone needs to transfer to peasant farm holdings, and should communities stay as one of existing forms. According to the head of the association on economic development of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Aleksey Taragupta, representatives of communities are interested in the issue, how work of peasant farm holdings will be organized, and active work on their informing is taking place now. Transfer to the status of commodity producers and an opportunity for peasant farm holdings to receive additional subsidies, which are not currently available to communities, is very attractive for reindeer herders.

Aleksey Taragupta presented prospects of peasant farm holdings. The head of the family having reindeer can open a peasant farm holding as an entrepreneur and further, it he wants, he can expand and create new working places, to join together economies of his relatives or neighbors to a cooperative enterprise. According to the head of the association, on “the big land” farming is more developed and clear. To connect agriculture with reindeer husbandry, to inculcate peasant farm holdings to this branch is complicated work for specialized structures.

“As for reindeer herders being interested in the new form of economy, among them there are many people, who are observing over pathfinders, if there is positive experience in the future”. – Aleksey Taragupta notes, - “Then the number of participants will grow. The first peasant farm holding in reindeer husbandry has already appeared. Another family intended to create a community, but now they register documents for a peasant farm holding. For those, who just intended to create their economy, peasant farm holdings became more attractive than communities. There are many bonuses for novices here. All-sided attention is paid and support is rendered to them now”.
