The icebreaker "Sovetsky Soyuz" is being restored for the project "Yamal LNG"
Restoration of the nuclear-powered icebreaker "Sovetsky Soyuz" is being finished in Murmansk Oblast. It is planned that the ship will start working this year, and later it will go to coasts of Yamal. The icebreaker will be used in the largest arctic project "Yamal LNG".
The ship had much work in the 90-s, but later he stood alongside, waiting for utilization. Last year the icebreaker "Rossiya" was taken out service. It was decided to replace it with "Sovetsky Soyuz". A part of the crew from the icebreaker "Rossiya" will go to work to "Sovetsky Soyuz". The collective started planned repair and restoration. On the first stage resource of the reactor will be increased up to 150 thousand hours – about 8 years of uninterrupted work. The Kara Sea and the basin of the Ob River will be the basic place of work of the icebreaker. Building of the largest project "Yamal LNG" is taking place there. The total investments to creation of the plant on liquefying of gas and the sea port in the Arctic are evaluated on 1 trillion rubles, as it is informed on the portal vesti-yamal.ru. Nuclear-powered icebreakers of the Arktika project are reliable and universal. Soviet engineers even foresaw their use as military ships. Prolongation of working resource of nuclear-powered icebreakers of the Arktika type will give time to ship-builders for creation of icebreakers of new kind LK-60. The Baltiysky Zavod will build three new ships for Atomflot.
