The Northern fleet is going to sea in the Arctic
Continuation of the full-scale complex of activities on development of the Arctic will become one of priority tasks for the Northern fleet, as "Arktika-Info" informs. It is being expected that during summer of 2014 ships of the Northern fleet will go to sea to islands of the archipelagoes Franz Joseph Land and Severnaya Zemlya, the New Siberian Islands and Wrangel Island.
The Northern fleet is to develop military infrastructure practically on all the archipelagoes and islands of the Arctic Ocean for creation of the unified system of observation over air, above-water and underwater situation. By the words of the commander of the Northern fleet, admiral Vladimir Korolyov quoted by ITAR-TASS, all various activities of the fleet in the Arctic, first of all, will be fulfilled with the aim of preservation of the Northern Sea Route as a national transport system of Russia and also for providing of maritime economic activity of the Russian Federation in the given region. By his words, crews of nuclear-powered submarines will many times fulfill tasks of under-ice navigation, including, for exploration of new and temporally forgotten regions of navigation in arctic seas. Also sailors and scientists will study navigation and hydrographic situation, will correct maps and conduct hydro-meteorological observations.
