This is a big breakthrough not only for Yamal but also for the whole country. Thus the acting governor of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug Dmitry Artyukhov commented on the beginning of deliveries of liquefied natural gas to China on the Northern Sea Route.

As we should remind, on the 19th of July the ceremony of unloading of the Arc7 ice class tankers “Vladimir Rusanov” and “Eduard Toll” took place in Rudong, China. The journey time from the arctic port of Sabetta to its destination made only 19 days, what is almost two times less than the routes through the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca. “The President of Russia set the important task – several times to increase amounts of cargo traffic on the Northern Sea Route. In 2024 they should reach 80 million tonnes”, the head of the arctic region said. Dmitry Artyukhov underlines that infrastructure of the Arctic will be actively developed, including through construction of the polar transport route “The Northern Latitudinal Railway”, as the press service of the governor of Yamal informs. It will connect the Northern Railway and the Sverdlovsk Railway into a single “frame”. The next step is to bring the railroad line to the port of Sabetta, what will provide goods going on the Northern Latitudinal Railway with access to the Northern Sea Route. “The port of Sabetta should become a universal transport point, the largest on the entire Northern Sea Route”, he underlined. The project “Yamal LNG” is being fulfilled on the Yamal Peninsula behind the Polar Circle on the basis of the South Tambey gas field. Construction of the plant on liquefying of natural gas is being fulfilled in three stages. The first line was started up in December 2017, the second and the third will be started up in 2018 and 2019. The project provides annual production of about 16 million and 500 thousand tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and up to 1 million and 200 thousand tonnes of gas condensate with delivery to markets in Europe new for Russian gas and mainly to countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
