The team of professionals started cleaning Beliy Island

The team of professionals of the Arctic ecological expedition safely reached Beliy Island. 9 qualified workers, gas and arc welders and woodworkers overcame the way in 1000 kilometers during 5 days along the winter road by three all-terrain vehicles on the route Labytnangi – Seyakha – Sabetta – Malygin Strait – Beliy Island. The expedition is provided with all equipment necessary for conducting of ecological activities, also food products and fuel.

By the information given in the press-service of the governor of Yamal, the professionals started ecological work. During a month they should clean the territory near the Polar marine hydro-meteorological station (n.a. M.V. Popov). During this time it is planned to conduct dismantling of ramshackle constructions and collecting of metal scraps. Conducting of this work in winter-spring season is stipulated with so that use of heavy machinery in summer is impossible according to ecological and practical reasons. Therefore, all kinds of work with use of machinery can be conducted only in winter. In addition to cleaning of the territory the expedition will fulfill another not less important task – the workers will prepare the foundation for the stationary center on Beliy Island. It is supposed to open the center in summer. The stationary center will combine long-term ecological monitoring of basic parameters of ecological systems and the opportunity to fulfill international scientific and research projects on its basis. Also they will prepare residential space for summer and evaluate potential for setting of regular communication of the island with Sabetta for delivery of additional cargoes.
