Before his visit to France the President of Russia will conduct the sitting of the round table in Saint-Petersburg with experts of scientific and business society on the issue of effective and safe development of the Arctic.

It is planned to discuss issues of scientific support of the Arctic development and ecological security at fulfillment of shelf projects, as the agency of economic information "PRIME" informs. Issues on development of the Arctic were discussed in details within the sitting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, which was conducted by Vladimir Putin in April. As it is underlined by the president, Russia intends further to allocate considerable funds to the Arctic, to solve tasks connected with socioeconomic development of arctic regions and to strengthen safety. The president called to consider dynamically changing external economic and socioeconomic situation in the world and to take additional measures in order not to lag behind the partners, keeping Russian influence in the region. By the evaluation of experts, the total reserves of fuel and energy resources in the arctic part of Russia exceed 1 trillion and 600 milliard tons, and the continental shelf contains about one fourth of all shelf reserves of hydrocarbon raw materials in the world. The row of large projects is being fulfilled here. In particular, the Northern Sea Route is being revived, the modern port of Sabetta is being constructed, and large production on processing of liquefied natural gas on the basis of the South-Tambey field is being created in Yamal. Besides, companies start working on the arctic shelf. Thus, offloading of oil was started from the platform "Prirazlomnaya" in the Pechora Sea. In the beginning of the year Russia extended limits of its territory on the arctic shelf. In 2001 Moscow sent the request to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, claiming for the part, the bottom of which is continuation of the Russian shelf. Later the request was divided in two – on the Sea of Okhotsk and the Arctic Ocean. On the 15th of March of 2014 the Commission recognized the request on the Sea of Okhotsk – the enclave with the area 52 thousand square kilometers – as a part of the Russian continental shelf. By evaluation of geologists, the total amount of hydrocarbons found there exceeds 1 milliard tons. The second request – on the Arctic Ocean – will be ready for presentation this autumn.
