Volunteers from Russia and the CIS countries will continue cleaning the uninhabited Vilkitsky Island

In July-August volunteers will continue cleaning Vilkitsky Island. In addition, scientific research will be conducted there. This information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” in the department of external relations of Yamal.

The competitive selection will be started in March and will last until June. The most courageous and hardy volunteers will be selected for each shift. They will be tested in absentia and in training camps.

As it is noted in the regional department of external relations, over the years the international volunteer movement has proved its effectiveness on Beliy Island, therefore, this principle was preserved in organizing of the expedition to Vilkitsky. It is known that volunteers from Bulgaria, Israel, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan made their ecological contribution to the cleaning of the island in different years. This year it is planned to attract volunteers from the regions of Russia and other CIS countries.

During two years of the expedition volunteers cleaned the area in 10 hectares near the polar weather station, as well as 20 hectares of the adjoining territory of the former military unit and the entire coastline of the island, collecting 129 tonnes of metal. In 2019 it is planned to continue cleaning Vilkitsky Island in the Kara Sea.
