Weather in Tazovskiy is favorable for reindeer calves and their mothers

Reindeer calving is continued in agro-industrial enterprises of Tazovskiy district. According to specialists, it will last till the 5th-10th of June. It is expected that 8500 reindeer calves will appear this year.

The first calf in 2020 appeared in the agricultural cooperative “Tazovskiy” on the 25th of April, as the district administration informs. It is connected with the fact that the herds of the enterprise are pastured in the south of the district – in tundra of Tazovskiy. Reindeer herders always prepare carefully for reindeer calving.

“Tundra-dwellers protect she-reindeer from stress. They set up special corrals to separate the breeding stock from the he-reindeer group. There she-reindeer are together with calves until the end of calving, when the calves become strong enough. Calving pastures, as a rule, are rich and located on high ground, where thawed patches appear first. This year the weather is favorable, it has a good effect on state of calves and their mothers”, said Aleksey Rozhkov, the chairman of the enterprise “Tazovskiy”.

According to the acting director Aleksey Salinder, this year calving in the state farm “Antipayutinskiy” started later than usual because of the unique feature of she-reindeer to bear offspring until favorable conditions begin. This year the first calves appeared in the first days of May. The final results of calving will be summed up after the first ten days of June, when reindeer herders will unify the herd for traveling to summer pastures.

In total, more than 250 thousand reindeer are pastured in Tazovskiy district. This is one of the largest herds in Yamal.
