Yamal strengthens its positions among regions of circumpolar countries

International activity of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is effective, systemic, based on long-term strategic planning and directed to strengthen its positions among regions of circumpolar countries.

This information was given by the acting director of the regional department of international and external economic relations Sergey Uramayev on the interregional coordination conference on issues of development of international and external economic relations of Russian regions and interaction with the Ministry for foreign affairs of Russia. It took place in the representative office of the Ministry for foreign affairs of Russia in Yekaterinburg before the festive events dedicated to its anniversary. Sergey Uramayev reported about current and future plans of international activity of Yamal. He notes that during the latest years considerable interest among the world community was aroused with regional experience in support of indigenous peoples of the Far North, as the press-service of the governor of Yamal informs. The invitation of the official delegation of Yamal for participation in the fourteenth session at the UN headquarters in New York became the result of the inter-session meeting of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues successfully conducted last February in Salekhard. The representatives of Yamal presented unique experience on preservation and sustainable socioeconomic development of traditional lifestyle and economy of indigenous peoples residing in the Autonomous Okrug. The presentation of the Yamal project on development of a nomadic form of education in process of teaching children of indigenous peoples of the North took place on the fifteenth session. As the speaker informs, Yamal pays great attention to fulfillment of joint activities in exchange of experience with foreign partners in social and cultural-humanitarian sphere, including within agreements with the University of the Arctic, the Northern Forum, the International Committee of the Arctic Winter Games. Sergey Uramayev reminds that the decision about support from the side of the Russian Ministry for foreign affairs in fulfillment of the initiative of the region within the scientific-historical project “Kara Sea Expeditions” and work on the issue about conducting of the Arctic Winter Games in Yamal was taken this April on the meeting of the governor of Yamal Dmitriy Kobylkin and the minister for foreign affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. The government of the region actively supports initiatives of volunteer community. In 2014 ecological and sociological organization “Green Arctic” was created. The project on cleaning of Beliy Island in the Kara Sea, where volunteers from Russia and foreign countries worked, is a bright example of fulfillment of environmental policy in the Arctic. During 5 years more than 800 tons of scrap metal were collected, about 70 hectares of land were cleaned, and the scientific and research station was created on the island.
