The unique arctic shuttle tanker of Sovcomflot “Shturman Albanov” successfully delivered the first large-tonnage consignment of crude oil from Novoportovskoye field to the port of Murmansk.

Loading of 34 thousand tons of oil was fulfilled through the Vorota Arktiki (Arctic Gate) terminal in the district of Mys Kamenniy, the Gulf of Ob in the Kara Sea. The director general, the chairman of the board of “Sovcomflot” Sergey Frank underlines that the successful start of work of the arctic tanker “Shturman Albanov” is a remarkable event. As he notes, for the first time in history of sea navigation the new tankers of Sovcomflot will provide transportation of hydrocarbons from the Gulf of Ob in conditions of year-round navigation. Sovcomflot is proud of its participation in the unique project – development of Novoportovskoye oil, gas, condensate field. Such industrial projects are the basis of steady economic development of the arctic region, as Sergey Frank notes. “Shturman Albanov” is the lead ship of the series of arctic shuttle tankers ordered by the group of companies “Sovcomflot” within the long-term contract with the company “Gazprom Neft”. They are designed for delivery of crude oil from the Yamal peninsula to the port of Murmansk in the conditions of year-round navigation. The deadweight of each tanker makes about 42 thousand tons. The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping assigned the ice class Arc7 to the ships, as the TV channel “Arctic TV” informs. Technical characteristics of “Shturman Albanov” are unique. The new ship is designed with consideration of special aspects of water areas of the Gulf of Ob, which is distinguished with big number of shallow places, with respectively small depth on separate places of navigation – less than 10 meters, and covered with ice from October to July. “Shturman Albanov” is able to work at temperatures up to 45C degrees below zero. The draft of the ship allows maneuvering freely in the Gulf of Ob. The propulsion unit consisting of two Azipod thrusters with the total capacity 22 MW provides the tanker with high maneuverability in ice hummocks and ice fields.
