Ludmila Lipatova participated in the Northern anthropological seminar
The open Northern anthropological seminar took place in Saint-Petersburg in Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Peter the Great (The Kunstkamera). The action was dedicated to the 9th international conference "Siberian Readings".
The participants listened to 2 reports. A scientist Gertrude Eilmsteiner-Saxinger from the University of Vienna touched upon the social problem of oil and gas extraction being conducted under a rotation system. In her work she scrutinizes reasons, why people agree to work under a rotation system, and with what problems they face.
The scientific employee of the Museum-exhibition complex of Shemanovskiy Ludmila Lipatova told about another side of prospecting and extracting work in Yamal. She quoted notes from diaries of the first explorers of the North - builders and rotation workers. Also she told how difficult it had been for indigenous peoples to live near the arrived civilization. Ludmila Lipatova underlines that it is necessary to teach people arriving to the North to local traditions, and then there will be less problems in relations with indigenous ethnic minorities.
In the course of the discussion the participants came to a conclusion. It is really necessary that, going to work under a rotation system, employees must study local culture in order to exclude conflict situations.
