The first medical expedition to Krasnoselkoup district of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug was completed.

Recently specialists of the scientific center for study of the Arctic have visited the district, gathering data about medical-social and medical-ecological aspects of health of residents of the district center. According to the deputy director of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, doctor of medical sciences Andrey Lobanov, during the expedition the scientists conducted standard medical examinations, paying attention to typical problems of northerners - pathologies of cardiovascular system, respiratory organs, musculoskeletal system and central nervous system. The researchers were also interested in traditional nutrition of indigenous people in Krasnoselkoup, food safety, use of beneficial properties of plant and animal raw materials of the territory. Andrey Lobanov made preliminary conclusions: “Products of hunting, for example, elk flesh, play a significant role in the diet of the residents of Krasnoselkoup. And since hunting is a rather difficult type of traditional economic activity, diseases of musculoskeletal system of traumatic nature are very widespread among the male population. Such pathologies are less common in tundra, in remote national villages and nomadic camps, though life there is even more difficult”. 130 people participated in the medical research of the scientific center for study of the Arctic. The residents of the settlement received consultations from a pulmonologist and a neurologist. Scientists collected samples of biomaterial for further medical and biological researches in laboratories of Tomsk State University, Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after Mikhail Lomonosov and the Institute of Environmental Physiology, the Ural Branch of the RAS, Arkhangelsk. In August the employees of the scientific center plan to come back to Krasnoselkoup district to conduct researches in the settlements Tolka, Ratta and others, as the scientific center for study of the Arctic informs.
