The main Museum of Yamal – the Museum and Exhibition Complex of Ivan Shemanovskiy hosts the exhibition “The travel to the Edge of the Earth”. It contains portraits and photographs of scientists, researchers, travelers, politicians, who visited Obdorsk region. (The note: Obdorsk is the former name of Salekhard – the capital of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug).

This information was given to a correspondent of the news agency “Sever-Press” in the sector of public relations of the regional museum. Visitors will be acquainted to historical persons, who had shown interest in the town and the region. Among them there were: the founder of Obdorsk mission – Ivan Shemanovskiy (father Irinarkh), a scientist Vladimir Yevladov, a writer and a researcher Boris Zhitkov. They were fascinated with severe and amazing nature of the arctic region, culture of northern peoples, the unique geographical location of Obdorsk situated on the Polar Circle. Majority of travelers came here in search primarily for scientific interest. Many expeditions went through the Kara Sea and the Gulf of Ob; they contributed to development of navigation and sea trade, which opened the Yamal Peninsula to the world. A row of ethnographers visited this place to study culture and life of indigenous peoples of the North. The scientists had a great interest in the Ostyaks (Khanty people) and Samoyeds (Nenets people), who lived here for centuries. Archaeologists, in their turn, shed light on the distant past of the region. In addition to researchers and travelers, officials of different ranks, being on duty, visited Obdorsk as the center of Obdorsk volost of Beryozovsky uyezd of Tobolsk province. They left various notes about Obdorsk region. Thus, in his notes the governor of Tobolsk Aleksey Kornilov expressed hope for possible improvement in population’s life on remote areas of Siberia. And the aide-de-camp of the Emperor of Russia, count Benckendorff told about Samoyedic Prince and unusual observation over the summer sun, which did not set over the horizon.
