Archeological researches were conducted on the monument Salekhard-4 situated several kilometers away from the capital of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug on the Poluy River.

According to the words of the head of the field research, a senior researcher of the sector of archeology of the scientific center for study of the Arctic, candidate of historical sciences Olga Tupakhina, the monument was multi-layered and very interesting. Planning this expedition, the archeologists expected to find remains of settlements of the Bronze epoch and early Middle Ages. But they did not see any sign of hearths, pillar pits earlier containing wooden constructions of homes or household buildings. On the excavation area in 120 square meters they discovered pottery fragments and vessels of the 2nd-7th centuries of our era related to Karymsky and Zelenogorsky stages of the Lower Ob culture and also single artifacts from the Bronze Age and accumulation of ashes. Apparently, on this place people were busy with metal smelting. In addition, on the monument the scientists discovered two burial spots, as the scientific center for study of the Arctic informs the news agency “Sever-Press”. Traces of the graves were covered with wooden decking, as the head of the expedition Olga Tupakhina notes. According to the preliminary data, they belong to Karymsky stage of the Lower Ob culture. It is interesting that there is a stone approximately in the middle of each grave. The scientists will determine and analyze what sacred function stones carried in rituals of ancient hunters and fishermen. Similar burials were discovered in different time in Surgut Priobye. Olga Tupakhina does not exclude that an ancient settlement existed in the district of Salekhard-4. Its remains, perhaps, are situated behind the official boundaries of the monument. As we should add, the archaeological monument Salekhard-4 was discovered in 2009 by the archaeologists Andrey Gusev and Olga Tupakhina. Fragments of ceramic vessels from the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages, one stone tool of the Bronze Age gave the scientists a reason to believe that the monument had been inhabited in different periods of time. The archaeological researches are being fulfilled here for the first time.
